Can you imagine trying to walk some dolt in Mississippi through modem configuration when they can't even figure out what the power cable on their home router is?Īlso don't forget the reason they control the configuration of the modem is all about management -> the ability to bulk upgrade and configure them to take advantage of changes in the network or to push firmware upgrades etc. The ISP controls the majority of the functionality of the modem because they don't want people in there screwing up the modem configuration and doing things they shouldn't. I've been buying Arris (ex-Motorola) Surfboards for years and they are bullet-proof. If you don't like you can always go for another. I mean sure if you buy a Netgear modem I would bet money you'd have a bad time, but it's an open market and almost all cable companies allow you to BYOM. There are some awesome modem manufacturer's out there, Arris makes solid modems and they bought out Motorola who were another solid manufacturer. As someone who has worked in the cable industry your post seems to reek of ignorance.
